Sts. Joseph and John School offers a state-of-the-art computer lab, a mobile wireless Mac computer lab, a mobile iPad lab, a library equipped with i-Mac computers, classrooms equipped with interactive technology, computer educational learning programs, a new science lab, and a student-run TV station. We offer a 1:1 ratio of Chromebooks available for students in Grades 6-8.
Technology is integrated into all curriculum areas. Our students begin by receiving computer keyboarding instruction in Kindergarten and by fourth grade, for example, present a Social Studies biography through a PowerPoint Presentation. The Middle School Students design presentations using podcasts.
We strive to equip our classrooms with state-of-the-art technology. All of our classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards, Active Boards or Active Panels. These boards are interactive computerized classroom boards. They are a tool that our teachers use to present lessons in fun and exciting ways, for example, allowing our students to take virtual field trips, to interactively view maps and geography, to view principles of physics in action, and to virtually visit an archeological dig site.
Our students experience science through hands-on science experiments which foster skills in comparing, contrasting and analyzing concepts. Our primary students, for example, observe and record stages of life cycles of tadpoles and caterpillars and our intermediate and Middle School Students conduct many different types of dissections. As part of our science enrichment program, we offer a Science Club and our students compete in several science fairs and Science Olympiad competitions throughout the year. We are pleased that our students have received many awards in the National Science Olympiad competitions.
Our students conduct daily television broadcasts using closed-circuit television. Our students broadcast the morning news, weather, and announcements. This provides students with a hands-on way to learn about broadcasting and technology as well as to gain communication, organization, and research skills.
Sts. Joseph and John School is dedicated to keeping our technology state-of-the-art and has created a Technology Committee to oversee this work. This committee and the school will work together to create and further our advanced technology plans.
The SJJ Viking Visionary Center is a place for our students to design, invent, collaborate, connect and have fun using the principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This Makerspace allows students to have the freedom to design, engineer, create, build and collaborate using both low-and high-tech options.
